Buying Guide
Get the tape measure out before looking at anything else, and check two measurements at home: the height, which should stay level with or just under your sofa's seat cushion, and the length, which should run to roughly two-thirds of that sofa. Material, shape and colour come next, depending on how you'll use it. Below you'll find our categories, each with three recommended models, their exact dimensions and price.
Material
If you're torn between materials, go with wood: it's the one that will forgive you the most. A glass mark can be sanded out, a knocked corner can be touched up, and the tone works with almost any sofa, unlike a glass coffee table, which shows every mark. It's also the widest range, from oak-effect melamine panel right up to solid wood models. If you like a warmer, richer tone, a walnut coffee table is worth a look. For a woven, more relaxed texture instead, try a rattan coffee table. If you'd rather compare it against stone, our travertine guide is worth a look. And for a lighter, veined finish instead, browse the marble-effect selection. Not sure which material wins for you? Our wood vs. glass comparison walks through the trade-offs in detail. Two lines worth checking on the listing, because everything hinges on them: the edge finish and the stated weight.

Shape
Choose it for circulation, not style: no corner to knock into, you go round it without thinking, and it looks visually lighter than a rectangular coffee table of the same surface. It's the right instinct in a small living room and with young children. Its limit, stated plainly: less usable surface for the same diameter, and a harder match with a tightly closed corner sofa, where an oval coffee table usually fits more easily. For an equally soft look with more surface than round, consider the organic-shaped design. The cloud coffee table pushes that soft-edge idea even further. Aim for 60 to 80 cm in diameter in front of a two-seater, 90 cm or more in front of a three-seater.

Feature
The top rises to dining height on a strut mechanism and comes back down with one hand. It's the feature that will change your day-to-day the most if you eat in front of the television or work from the sofa — and if storage matters too, a coffee table with storage solves both needs at once. Don't look at the top, look at the mechanism: a gas strut copes with repeated use far better than a plain spring, which eventually goes soft. If you like flexible surfaces more broadly, nesting coffee tables offer a similar kind of adaptability, and an extendable coffee table does the same by growing outward instead of upward. Also check the raised height, it should reach 55 to 65 cm, much like you'd expect from a folding coffee table.

Style
On a design table, it's the base that does all the work, not the top: four slim rods evoke an industrial coffee table, while a solid plinth or a sculpted base tell a completely different story under the same surface. That solid plinth look, in wood, is the signature of the Scandinavian coffee table, whereas a sculpted, curved base points instead to a vintage coffee table. One concrete detail the look can make you overlook, and that you should check on the listing: the spread of the legs — often what separates a true modern coffee table from something purely decorative. Too narrow, and the table tips the moment you lean on an edge; too wide, and you won't be able to get round it in a tight room.

Colour
White opens up a room and blends into a light interior, the opposite effect of a black coffee table, which anchors the space instead. Settle on the finish first, the two are worlds apart: matt, discreet and easy to live with, or glossy lacquer, which bounces light but shows every mark. With children or a dog, go matt, it cleans without leaving rings. If you'd rather stay warm without going fully dark, a brown coffee table is a middle ground worth considering; for a touch of shine instead, a gold coffee table brings warmth without the upkeep that glossy white needs. And know this if you're keeping it long-term: on the more affordable finishes, pure white yellows slightly over the years, while a beige coffee table tends to hide that kind of ageing better. If dark wood tempts you more than white or black, our dark wood coffee table guide breaks down the best options.

Size
Don't go by the length shown, work out the floor space it actually takes up. A narrow, elongated model takes up far less room than a compact square of the same area, because it leaves a walkway clear on one side. The figure to remember: 40 cm between the piece and the seat, or you'll knock into it standing up — a 60cm coffee table is a good benchmark size to check against. Castor or folding models buy you a little more space still if the room needs to double up.

Price
At the entry-level end, you'll find genuine coffee tables, not just side tables — plenty of them listed among current coffee table deals. What budget changes: a panel top rather than solid wood, veneered edges, assembly you'll do yourself. What it doesn't necessarily change: the dimensions and everyday sturdiness. It's worth comparing manufacturers before you settle on one, too — our brand comparison index covers the main names at this price point. Two things to check before you check out: the thickness of the top, and the number of fixing points on the legs. That's where the gap opens up between a table that holds and one that develops play.

Worth knowing
Between 40 and 45 cm: beyond that, it's not really a coffee table any more. Since sofa seats sit 45 to 60 cm off the floor depending on the model, your top will always end up a touch lower, which is comfortable. Measure your seat before ordering, the range is wide: too tall, and you knock your knees sitting down; too low, and you lean forward.
A three-seater sofa measures around 200 cm: aim for a table of 120 to 140 cm, or two-thirds. And leave 40 to 50 cm of clearance between the table and the sofa, or you won't be able to move around freely.
Choose round in a small living room, a tight walkway, or with young children: no corners, and you go round it easily. Choose rectangular as soon as you want more usable surface in front of a straight sofa.
What wears out first is the mechanism, not the top: check that point above all. Gas-strut models cope with repeated use far better than plain spring ones.
It mostly depends on the material and the size: a small melamine panel doesn't compare with a long marble top. The price shown on each model is the one recorded on Amazon.

We don't test the furniture: we record each piece's measurements one by one and say where our figures come from. When a dimension is missing from a listing, we say so instead of guessing. Our method.
