Which Coffee Table with a Chaise Longue?

A chaise longue extends one side of the sofa into a lounging section, which shifts the seat's centre of gravity towards a single edge. The coffee table needs to follow that shift rather than sit centred as it would with a classic straight sofa. An oval shape, with no sharp angle, follows the rounded edge of the extended section better than a strict rectangle. Five oval or rectangular models, from Scandinavian style to lift-top, built to sit alongside a chaise longue without bumping into its end. A curved edge suits a chaise longue well, which is why our pick of circular storage tables is worth a look. Our square or oval coffee table comparison weighs the rounded shape against a sharper one, while a plain square coffee table or a cloud coffee table takes the idea further still, and the full oval coffee table range covers every finish beyond these five. For the curved alternative that follows a lounging sofa just as well, see our round coffee table lineup.

An oval follows the chaise's edge, a rectangle cuts it off

The chaise longue draws a curve at its end, the point where the seat turns into a leg rest. Where the room favours straight lines elsewhere, a squared-off design can still work despite that awkward corner near the chaise. By following the chaise's curve instead of cutting across it, the curved-silhouette models avoid that same mismatch. A strict rectangle places its corner right there, which visually snags the sofa's line instead of carrying it forward. The same curve problem appears next door, where a coffee table for a corner sofa layout has to avoid clashing angles.

An oval table, or any shape with softened angles, follows this movement without breaking it, a choice found in four of the five models on this page.

The downside of an oval: it takes up a less regular floor footprint than a rectangle, which can complicate the clearance calculation if the room is narrow on one side of the chaise.

Position the table facing the straight section, not the extended end

The straight part of the sofa, where you sit facing the table rather than reclining, remains the best marker for centring the piece: the table should face this section, not sit in front of the extended end where nobody really rests their feet level with the top.

In front of the chaise's end itself, keep an open space or a small footstool instead: a large table there gets in the way of reclining, the whole point of this type of sofa.

If the table is oval and long enough, it can slightly overhang along the chaise's edge without being in the way, unlike a right angle, which would knock against the armrest.

Height, allowing for the reclined position

Lying on a chaise longue, your eye level drops lower than from an upright seat: a top close to the 45 cm maximum looks taller than it would in front of a standard sofa, where the seat ranges from 45 to 60 cm.

It's best to aim for a lower table than average if you spend a lot of time reclined, rather than an adjustable model that rises high, like one built for eating in front of the screen.

The usual 40 to 50 cm clearance still applies on the straight-seat side; on the chaise side, allow a bit more so as not to catch a foot when lying down or getting up, a wider movement than simply standing from a straight sofa.

Storage, designed with the reclined position in mind

Reaching a drawer under the top from a chaise longue takes a different movement than from an upright seat: the arm reaches sideways more than downwards. Storage accessed from above, like a lift-up top, is often easier to use in this position than a drawer you have to pull towards yourself while leaning from the extended end.

An open low shelf still comes in handy for occasional use: sliding in a blanket or a book while lying down, without having to get up fully. It suits less well what you'd rather keep out of sight, since it stays visible from the reclined position far more than closed storage would.

The choice mainly depends on how the chaise is mainly used: for working or eating while reclined, a top that lifts brings the item closer with no effort; for simply reading or resting, closed storage keeps the surface clear and your mind at ease about what's underneath.

Chaise on the left or right: what changes for the table

A chaise longue sofa comes in two versions, facing left or right depending on the maker, and this detail directly changes which side the table should sit on. Always check this before ordering: an oval table turns easily, but an asymmetric model, like a lift-up top whose mechanism only works on one side, can end up wrongly oriented once delivered.

The wall closest to the sofa often also decides the chosen orientation: the chaise is usually placed on the side that leaves the most clearance, and the table follows that choice by sitting in front of the remaining straight section, whichever side is picked.

If you're still unsure between the two orientations at the time of buying, a symmetric table, with no mechanism or drawer facing just one side, remains the safest choice: it fits either layout without needing to be turned around or replaced if the living room arrangement changes later.

A throw or a meal tray, set down without leaving the chaise

The distance between the chaise's edge and the table decides whether you can set down a meal tray without getting up. Too far, the movement becomes awkward; too close, the lift-up top or the drawer no longer opens properly once the sofa is occupied.

A cushion or throw often left on the extended end also cuts into the space between your body and the table: it's worth allowing a slightly wider margin than the bare minimum if you tend to settle in with several cushions around you. A slightly wider top than strictly necessary stays more comfortable than one that's too tight, even if it costs a little clearance elsewhere in the room.

90*60*40cm · White

90 cm by 60 cm, an oval Scandinavian-style table in White with a low shelf. Its rounded shape follows the sofa's edge with no corner poking towards the extended end. At 40 cm, it stays below a standard seat. Its downside: the open shelf underneath exposes items on the chaise side, more visible from this reclined position than a solid top.

90 cm by 50 cm: this table keeps a tempered glass top, here in 90*50*43cm-black, carried on a frame with two low shelves. The glass lets the eye carry through to the foot of the chaise instead of cutting the sofa's line. At 43 cm tall, it fits under most armrests. Glass's usual drawback still holds here: fingerprints show up more when you're lying right next to it, at eye level.

105 x 65 x 43 cm (L x l x H) · Natural, Black

105 cm by 65 cm, a two-tier top in faux Natural, Black marble, the longest of the five. Its size suits a wide chaise longue with plenty of clearance in front. The downside of this generous size: at 43 cm, it takes up floor space that leaves less room to move if your living room is narrow next to the chaise.
